How Much Does a Shed Foundation Cost?

A shed foundation costs about $2–$14 per square foot, or roughly $384–$2,688 for a 12×16 shed. Gravel pads are the best value for most storage sheds; concrete slabs suit workshops and heavy equipment.

The foundation is the least visible part of a shed and the most important. A level, well-drained base prevents sticking doors, warped floors, and rot. Paying a little more for proper site prep is almost always cheaper than repairing a shed that settled.

What each option includes

Gravel pad

A gravel pad is excavated to about 4–6 inches, filled with compacted crushed stone, and leveled. It drains well and is the most common choice for delivered sheds. Edge restraints or a treated timber border help keep the stone in place.

Wood skids

Treated 4×4 or 6×6 beams are set on level ground or gravel, and the shed floor is built on top. Skids spread the load and allow the shed to be dragged to a new location. They still need a level, drained base.

Concrete slab

A poured slab, typically 4–6 inches thick with gravel base and reinforcement, provides the most stable and permanent floor. It costs the most and makes the shed difficult or impossible to move.

Deck blocks and piers

Precast blocks or concrete piers raise the shed off the ground and can handle moderate slopes. Piers are set below frost depth in cold climates to prevent heaving. Both require careful layout and leveling.

Site prep costs

WorkTypical cost
Clearing grass and topsoil$200–$800
Grading and leveling$300–$1,200
Removing a tree or stump$300–$1,500
Small retaining wall$1,000–$5,000
Hauling excess soil$200–$700

Site prep can cost as much as the foundation itself on a sloped or overgrown lot. Get a quote that separates prep from foundation work so you can see what is driving the price.

Why the base matters

A shed is only as straight as its foundation. If the base is uneven, the frame twists, doors stop closing, and water pools under the floor. If drainage is poor, moisture wicks into the floor and framing, causing rot and mold. Most shed manufacturers require a level base for the warranty to remain valid.

Check the shed manufacturer's foundation requirements before building. Some warranties specify a concrete slab or a minimum gravel depth.

Common foundation mistakes

  • Building on grass or loose topsoil instead of compacted base material.
  • Assuming the ground is level because it looks flat.
  • Skipping drainage away from the shed.
  • Using untreated wood in contact with soil.
  • Ignoring frost depth in cold climates.
  • Not checking setbacks, permits, or HOA rules before digging.

Shed foundation FAQ

How much does a foundation for a 12×16 shed cost?

About $384–$960 for wood skids, $576–$1,344 for a gravel pad, or $1,536–$2,688 for a concrete slab. Site prep and drainage are extra.

Can I put a shed directly on the ground?

Not recommended. Grass and topsoil settle, hold moisture, and rot wood. At minimum, remove the topsoil and build on a compacted gravel pad or treated skids.

Do I need a concrete slab for a shed?

No. Most storage sheds work well on gravel or skids. Concrete is worth it for workshops, heavy equipment, and permanent installations.

How deep should a gravel shed pad be?

Usually 4–6 inches of compacted crushed stone on prepared subgrade, deeper on soft soil. The finished pad must be level and drain away from the shed.

Do shed foundations need a permit?

Often yes when the shed is large, permanent, or on a concrete slab. Small portable sheds may be exempt. Check with the local building department and HOA.
